What Is Palo Santo?

Palo Santo is a mystical tree that grows on the coast of South America and is related to Frankincense, Myrrh and Copal.  In Spanish, the name literally means “Holy Wood”.  It is part of the citrus family and has sweet notes of pine, mint and lemon.

Ceremonial Benefits –

Palo Santo is enjoyed by many for its energetically cleansing and healing properties similar to Sage and Cedar.  It is a strong medicine that has been popularized for its heavenly presence in keeping energies grounded and clear.  It creates a pleasant, fresh smoke that works well in keeping away mosquitoes and other flying insects which is one of the prime uses for the people who live in Ecuador and Peru.  It provides an uplifting scent that raises your vibration in preparation for meditation and allows for a deeper connection to the Source of all creation.  It is also said that Palo Santo enhances creativity and brings good fortune to those who are open to its magic.

The best part of this magical tree is that it is wild crafted and sustainably harvested by a family that has planted over 30,000 trees back into the area over the last 10 years.

100% Sustainable and Natural

Burning Instructions

Use a candle, match or lighter to ignite your stick of Palo Santo.  Hold at about a 45 degree angle pointing the tip down toward the flame.  Allow it to burn for about 30 secs to 1 minute and then blow out.  Move about your workspace, home, car, bathroom or anywhere you would like to clear the energy.  The rich smell will also bring peace and clarity to the moment along with good feelings .  When finished, place the stick in a fire proof bowl of metal, glass or clay.  The glow will end on its own unless you blow on the ember which will keep the smoke going.  Always use caution and respect when working with fire.

Here at Sacred Wood Essence, we practice deep respect for Palo Santo. This “Holy Wood” from South America has the power to purify the air in our living spaces, soothe frayed nerves, and delight the senses. Palo Santo also brings sustainable livelihood to our partner communities who gather and steward it in their Ecuadorian homeland.

The Palo Santo tree’s natural range extends from the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico all the way south to Peru. Palo Santo’s range passes through the dry tropical forests of Ecuador, in the coastal hills above the Pacific Ocean. This endangered forest ecosystem provides ideal conditions for growing the most aromatic and dense Palo Santo on Earth.

Sadly, due to centuries of logging and over-grazing, only one percent of Ecuador’s original dry tropical forest remains today. As part of an integrated generational effort to restore these native woodlands, we source our Palo Santo exclusively from the hills above Puerto Lopez in the Manabi Region of Ecuador in partnership with a sustainable forest management program.

When a Palo Santo tree falls in the Ecuadorian dry tropical forest, we plant more! Since our inception in 2008, Sacred Wood Essence has worked with our partner communities in Ecuador to plant tens of thousands of Palo Santo trees. This not only ensures an abundance of Palo Santo for future generations but also incentivizes sustainable management and restoration of the entire dry tropical forest ecosystem.

Gathering Palo Santo has brought livelihood to many families in the Ecuadorian dry tropical forest. We believe that when communities earn just livelihood in harmony with nature, everyone benefits. We take our role as facilitators of this interwoven relationship seriously at Sacred Wood Essence.

Our partner communities never cut down live Palo Santo trees. In fact, it is illegal to do so under Ecuador’s strict conservation laws. After strong annual storms knock Palo Santo trees over, the fallen trees are allowed to remain on the forest floor for up to a decade. During this prolonged curing period, the naturally-occurring aromatic resins in the wood migrate to the heartwood and intensify.

Palo Santo is growing in popularity around the world beyond Ecuador’s shores, where it is primarily used as a smudge for purifying living spaces. This aligns closely with one of its traditional uses in Ecuador, where it is said to drive away bad energy and bring good luck to the home.

Palo Santo’s benefits go well beyond its popular use as a natural deodorizer and incense, however. It provides a trove of benefits for people to enjoy.

Palo Santo has strong antimicrobial properties. It is traditionally used as an ingredient in topical ointments to fight infections and aid in wound healing. In diluted form, Palo Santo can also be taken internally for colds, flus, and stomach ailments.

As an aromatherapy agent, Palo Santo has a calming and clarifying influence. It fights depression and alleviates anxiety. Palo Santo is also soporific and will help quiet the mind and bring stillness to the restless spirit.

Palo Santo is an excellent natural insect repellent. It is often burned on patios and in other outdoor living areas for this purpose. Try bringing smudge sticks or a Palo Santo spritzer on your next camping trip, and leave the insect repellent home!

Palo Santo is traditionally used to alleviate asthma and nausea. It is even used in lineaments to ease rheumatism and other types of inflammation. Palo Santo’s array of traditional uses is truly astounding. Clearly, more scientific research needs to be done on the many potential benefits that
Palo Santo can provide.

Sacred Wood Essence founder Erik Suarez first learned about Palo Santo while traveling through Santa Cruz, California in the early 2000’s. As a close friend burned a stick of Palo Santo in sacred circle, Erik was amazed and delighted by the effects of its aroma on his senses, his mind, and his mood.

As sometimes happens in life to receptive hearts, Palo Santo spoke to Erik. He felt called upon to work with Palo Santo’s energy and bring it to a wider audience.

Several years later, Erik traveled to Ecuador on a mission to the source. There, he visited the sustainable groves where the Palo Santo wood is grown. He toured many villages and met with the good people who gather it.

With renewed resolve, he decided to dedicate his life to shepherding this healing tree to a new audience in the north. In partnership with our partner communities in Ecuador, Sacred Wood Essence has developed many products to help you enjoy Palo Santo and receive its gifts.

We provide superior-quality smudge sticks and smudge powders for use in homes and cars. When you hold a stick of our Palo Santo in your hand, you will notice that is heavier and more intensely aromatic than a comparable smudge stick from other sources.

We also offer steam-extracted Palo Santo essential oil that is free of byproducts. We offer pure Palo Santo oil for aromatherapy diffusers and blending purposes, and we also provide diluted anointing oil that is safe for direct contact with the skin. Our Palo Santo spritzers in glass spray-bottles make it easy to purify and refresh the air in your living spaces. Spray it on fabrics, car seats, carpets, and curtains to remove musty odors and cleanse stale energy.

You can also burn Sacred Wood Essence Palo Santo candles to warm your mantle and altar.

Here at Sacred Wood Essence, Palo Santo touches our lives every day, not only through the healing power of its aroma but also through the good works we are able to perform in its service, the forests we restore, and the livelihoods we bring to the people of the Manibi region, supporting people to live in harmony with the land.

We are blessed to have received inspiration to work with this magical tree.
