Botanical Name: Asclepias tuberosa
Common Names: Butterfly Weed, wind root, Canada root, silkweed, orange swallow wort, tuber root
Pleurisy is a member of the milkweed genus named after the milky, white latex secreted from the plant when damaged. However, Asclepias tuberosa almost entirely lacks this latex and has a long and important history of use by people living within the plant’s range. Native to eastern North America, pleurisy root is an herbaceous perennial that is also known as butterfly weed. Its bright orange flowers produce an ample amount of nectar attracting an array of pollinators. Pleurisy root can be extracted or steeped in infusions.
Much of the plant is edible, including the young shoots, flower buds and stems. The milkweed fibers can be used to make fabric or rope.
