About Our Products
What are Melissa’s Botanicals Medicinal Hydrosols?
Our hydrosols are distilled in stainless steel stills and processed through certified organic methods at SAPAD located in Provence, France. True hydrosols are not essential oils added to water; they are the water part of essential oil distillation. Also known as floral waters, hydrolates, or distillates, hydrosols contain all of the water-soluble elements of a plant and are very effective for skin care, as well as extremely safe. Because they are a milder extract, hydrosols are suitable for all manner of applications where essential oils may be too strong. There is about 1-2 percent of the essential oil still present at the end of hydrosol filtration. Because of our purity and authenticity, one can use our hydrosols internally and externally liberally.
That valuable co-product is the hydrosol.
A true floral water is made differently.
We set aside as many as 150,000–200,000 roses specifically for the water. They go to a separate building and smaller traditional copper stills—never our essential-oil stills. The shorter, more concentrated distillation is controlled differently because this time:
We are distilling for the water.
And when the precious essential-oil fraction comes across into that water, we leave it there. We don’t skim it away or recover it for Rose Otto. It remains naturally dispersed within the floral water alongside the plant’s water-soluble constituents.
That is the difference.
Our floral waters contain no added alcohol or chemical preservatives. They are microfiltered, UV-treated and carefully protected from heat. We will even postpone importing them during extreme summer temperatures rather than compromise them in transit.
Floral waters have long been used in European and Middle Eastern botanical and culinary traditions—topically and, when produced for culinary use, in foods and beverages. We especially love them fresh, within approximately 6–12 months, when the aroma and flavor are closest to the freshly distilled plant and the naturally retained essential-oil fraction is at its most beautiful.
A hydrosol is the precious co-product of essential-oil distillation.
A true floral water is distilled because the water itself is the product.
The roses weren’t leftovers.
We saved them for the water. 🌹
