Actions: Eleuthero, Licorice and Sarsaparilla contain natural phytosterols (plant steroids) which are chemically similar to the steroid hormones produced by the adrenal glands. Many herbalists believe these herbs are supportive or restorative to the adrenals, and there is some scientific evidence to support this.
Uses: Exhaustion and diminished function of the adrenal glands caused by frequent or prolonged stress. This includes the physical and mental stresses associated with injury, illness, prolonged pain, overwork or severe exertion, mental strain, worry and anxiety. Especially indicated when “low energy” and lack of vitality are associated with mild adrenal hypofunction (under-activity).
May be helpful as supportive therapy when treating Addison’s Disease (chronic adrenocortical insufficiency) and other adrenal-deficient maladies manifesting as anemia, general languor and debility, low blood pressure, or feeble heart action.
Dose: Maintenance Tonic: Two times per day, take 30 to 40 drops in water.
Restorative Tonic: Three times per day, take 30 to 40 drops in water. One to three months’ use may be needed for full results.
Cautions: Addison’s Disease and other diseases of the adrenal glands can be very injurious or even fatal if not treated properly. This compound is not a substitute for qualified healthcare in such cases.
Although this compound is unlikely to do harm, its use in hyperadrenal conditions is contraindicated. This is especially true in Cushing’s Syndrome (excess of cortisol hormone) and Conn’s Syndrome (excess of aldosterone).
The extra energy experienced from taking this compound may create sleeplessness. If this happens, decrease dosage or do not take drops in the evening.
